Chule Church

The etymology of the word "Chule" is probably connected with the word "churi" which in old Georgian meant -cavity. The church was built by Samtshske Atabag and commander Agbuga in 1381.
From a once rich complex only the Church of St. George survives  - a church of hewn stone, in gray – pink color.

The church is decorated by the artist Arsen. At one time, under the dome was depicted the Ascension, on the neck of the dome - prophets, and on the pendentives – the angels. On the wall of the chancel was depicted the Communion of the Apostles, and before it the figures of the holy fathers, and deacons. On the walls of the church was also depicted the churchwarden. Today , only remnants of the frescoes are preserved.

Chule since ancient times had been an important cultural - educational center. With the strengthening of Islam, monastic activity gradually slowed , and since 1595, finally ceased. The Chule quarry became free to local residents. In 1849, Marie Brose returned Chule to the cultural Georgia. In 1935 - 1936, an effort was made to rebuild the church. The restoration, led by Russian architect Khmelevskiy, ended with the willful distortion of the monument. Restoration work begun in 1982 are continuing until now.
