Jikhashkari is a significant military is a strategic point of historical Odishi. The fortress appears in Georgian historical sources from the XVIII century. In the vicinity of the fortress, the rulers of Samegrelo, the Dadianis, had a summer palace. In 1813, in this palace the last ruler of Samegrelo David Dadiani was born. At the entrance of the fortress the date of its construction - XVIII century – is indicated. The fortress complex consisted of a citadel and a lower fortress. The citadel in on a mountaintop and is connected to the large courtyard of the fortress.
During archaeological excavations of 1968-1969, three construction layers were identified: the first of the IV-V centuries, the second – a period of construction and alteration in the VIII-IX centuries, and the third - the recovery and restoration period – in the XVI-XVII centuries. In the courtyard stands the tower, which is connected to the citadel of the tunnel. The tower and tunnel are constructions of the XVI century. In the courtyard of the citadel there are the ruins of palaces and churches. A small church on the east side of the citadel, dating from the XII-XIV centuries is severely damaged. Inside the wall of the fortress are three towers of the XII century.
