Kumurdo Church

Kumurdo church is one of the most important Georgian cathedrals of the X century. The inscription above the south entrance states that the church was built by the architect Sakotsari. The church foundation was laid during the reign of the Abkhazian king Leon in May 964, on Saturday. During the reign of Bagrat IV (1027-1072), the south gallery of the church was built. The inscription on the western entrance states that the church was renovated and redesigned in the XVI century.

Southern arch gallery of the temple dates to the XI century, and the entrance on the west side –to the XVI century. Kumurdo is built on transition planning. Besides ornaments, relief statues are found here - according to the inscription, one depicts Queen Gurandukht - mother of the King of Georgia Bagrat III, and the second – Gurandukht’s brother - Abkhazian king Leon III. In the altar decorations  four characters are visible: an angel, lion, ox and eagle. Over time, the altar was badly damaged, the dome collapsed and destroyed the ceiling. In place of the  ruined wall a new one of rough stone masonry was erected. In 1964,  the millennium anniversary of the construction of Kumurdo was celebrated.
