In the first half of the VII century there was built a church of martyrs Chkondidi. In the X century, King George II of Abkhazia founded the Bishopric Chkondidi. The church became dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and Martvili was only a toponym of the populated area. The Plan of the Martvili church is very similar to Mtskheta monastery Jvari, but it is not a copy of it. In the church is created a huge impression from the open  interior space. On its walls are depicted biblical scenes: Daniel with the Lions, Samson and the Lion, and the ascension of Christ with four Angels. Since its inception, the Bishopric Chkondidi is one of the most important cultural centers of Georgia and became a large diocese of West Georgia including the entire Church of Samegrelo.
