Church Matskhovriskari is mentioned in ancient chronicles from the XIV century. Although, according to some researchers, the period of construction of the church should be considered as the X century. Thus, the exact date of construction of the church is unknown. Also unknown is the name of the architect.
Previously, the church was built in honor of St. George. Under the initial plan, the church was a cross-domed symmetrical basilica. On the walls are clearly visible traces of alterations. In the first half of the XVII century, the temple was rebuilt by Levan II Dadiani. The temple was painted in the 60s and 70’s of the same century.
In 1855, after the capture of Zugdidi by Turks, the church was badly damaged. In 1874, the temple was rebuilt - the bell tower and oblong galleries were attached to the left and right sides, on one side of which is seen a series of columns, and on the other side - the wall.
To date, the church is known by the name Kviratskhoveli.
