Shemokmedi Monastery

In the XVI century historical Samtskhe - Saatabago was threatened destruction and mayhem from Turkey. For the sake of the vast treasures placed in Zarzma church in Guria was built the Transfiguration Cathedral, called "Small Zarzma."

Shemokmedi monastery consists of three monuments. Two of them are temples attached to each other: the Temple of the Savior (basil) XII century and domed church "Zarzma» XVI century. The third monument is the bell tower of the XVI century, which was restored in 1831.

Church of the Savior inside and outside is built of hewn stone. It has a marble floor. The church is a three-nave domed building. West facade of the temple decorated with an ornament that frames windows of the church. Two inscriptions are seen on the temple. Most of the floor is made from the white marble. Inside of the temple is completely covered with frescoes.

Church of the Transfiguration "Zarzma" in size is less than Church of the Redeemer. It is not decorated with ornaments. The eastern facade ends with five-edged semicircle. Over the windows octagonal dome is placed, which is lined with bluish stone taken from the nearby rocks. Monastery is circled by a high wall, which makes it not only a religious significance, but says more about its defensive function.
