The monastery complex was mainly created in the 1156-1203. The settlement was dedicated on August 15, 1185, during the reign of Queen Tamar (1184-1213). The Royal Monastery played a significant role in the political and economic life of the country. Vardzia, “it's a miracle - it is similar to the believability of Alexander’s wall and Heiber’s tower ...." wrote the chronicler of the Persian Safavid dynasty, in the XVI century, historian Hasanbeg Rumlu in his book "Al-Ahsan-Tavarihi" ("wonderful stories") .
During the time of the Mongol occupation (2d half of the XIII century), Vardzia monks actively fought for the salvation of the faith and national culture. In 1551, the monastery was destroyed by Persian troops and the famous icon of the Virgin, the doors of gold and steel, and many other cultural treasures were stolen by the enemy. In 1578, the monastery was completely deserted. After the Russian - Ottoman war (1828-1829), Vardzia was returned to Georgia.
After the establishment of Soviet power in Georgia, scientific study of the monastery complex began. In 1938, Vardzia was declared as a museum - reserve. In 1970-1971, archeological excavations were carried out. These explored 3 cultural layers of the early middle Ages, the XII century and the XIII-XIV centuries. Many examples of ceramics, earthenware fragments, metal casting, various utensils and household tools were found.
